South Stormont Housing Needs Assessment
Client: Township of South Stormont
Year: 2024
Focus Areas: Housing Strategy, Policy Development, Community Growth, Data-Driven Planning
Located just west of Cornwall in the United Counties of SDG, the Township of South Stormont is experiencing growing housing pressures linked to broader affordability challenges across Eastern Ontario. With a population of 13,570 and a mix of rural and urban settlement areas, the Township has seen rising housing costs and a shortage of diverse, attainable housing options.
In response, South Stormont initiated a comprehensive housing needs assessment to evaluate current conditions and chart a path forward. The study analyzes housing stock, development trends, land availability, and demographic projections to quantify future needs and identify key gaps. It also introduces policy frameworks and emerging concepts like missing middle housing to support more inclusive and sustainable growth.
The assessment is designed to provide Council and the community with clear, data-backed insights and recommendations to guide housing decisions over the next decade. Public and stakeholder input gathered through workshops and surveys also helped shape the findings. The result is a strategic foundation to support housing diversity, affordability, and resilience in one of Eastern Ontario’s fastest-growing communities.
